Age labels on baby shoes are a rough guide, and two babies of the same age can wear different sizes. A two-minute foot measurement is the most reliable way to choose a sandal size, especially when you are ordering online or buying a gift.
How to measure your baby's foot
- Place a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall. If your baby is standing, have them stand with their heel touching the wall; if not, gently hold the foot flat on the paper.
- Mark the tip of the longest toe. On many babies that is the big toe, but not always.
- Measure from the wall (or heel) to the mark in inches or centimeters.
- Measure both feet and use the longer one. Feet are often slightly different lengths.
- Measure later in the day if you can. Feet can be a little larger after a day of activity.
Match the measurement to the size chart
Compare the foot length with the Babe Basics sandal chart below. It is also on our Size Guide.
| Size | US size | Foot length (in) | Foot length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–6 months | 2.5–3.5 | 4.33 | 11.0 |
| 6–12 months | 4–4.5 | 4.65 | 11.8 |
| 12–18 months | 5–5.5 | 4.96 | 12.6 |
| 18–24 months | 5.5–6 | 5.28 | 13.4 |
If your baby is between sizes
Size up. A foot that already fills the smaller size will outgrow it quickly. Parents' reviews show why the measurement matters: the same style can feel small on one baby and roomy on another, so a measurement beats a guess based on age.
Check the fit when they arrive
- Your baby's toes should not reach past the front edge of the sole.
- Straps should sit snugly without pressing or leaving deep marks.
- Recheck the size every few weeks. Babies' feet grow quickly in the first two years.
